Artist Statement

The idea that art and life are closely entwined is most inspiring and one of my aspirations as an artist is not to create something new but to recreate something that already exists. I am often inspired by the natural world and elements connected with life, movement and change. These elements may be visible or invisible and this has led to an interest in the immaterial and the formal relationship between form and space. I often draw inspiration from the local landscape and much of my work is motivated by the juxtaposing of elements: the human made and the natural, the urban and the landscape, the physical and conceptual, the literal and the metaphoric. My recent work examines the relationship between the natural and human-made world by exploring the organic and manufactured form. Through printmaking and mixed media I am keen to explore the physical and visual qualities of materials 'found' and 'made' which may reveal connections between the structure of commonplace objects and the cultural environment in which we live. I am also keen to consider how the re-presentation of everyday objects through art can make us more aware of the landscape and our relationship to it.
